On November 29, 1947, the UN adopted Resolution 181 (also known as the Partition Resolution) that divided Great Britain’s former Palestinian mandate into Jewish and Arab states (effective May 1948). Yet, long prior to this action, the world community had legitimized the notion of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
